If your furniture is past the stage of shabby chic, it’s just pathetic. Give tired old furniture a new lease of life – or even transform a junk-shop find – with this step by step guide to painting furniture.

Sand any rough edges on the furniture before you start. Apply knotting solution to close nodes, if any. Treat unpainted furniture first, and if the surface has not been previously painted, check to see if it has knots. If so, carefully apply the solution of knotting and thus allow to dry before painting.

Remove existing paint, if necessary. If the surface is already painted, remove the old paint by scraping or chipping or sanding carefully with fine sandpaper. Wash the surface thoroughly to ensure it is perfectly clean before applying the primer layers and painting.

Brush on a coat of primer and let dry. Use acrylic paint to water based wood to apply the finishing paint. Use a brush to apply a layer of acrylic paint water-based, working in the same direction as the wood grain. Check for rough spots and sand using sandpaper in very fine grain. Apply the second coat.
